I'm an only. We have always given gifts to H's nieces and nephews for birthday and Christmas +
Nieces are now in their early 20s and we still do gifts. We even sent one a housewarming gift when she moved into her new home after graduation.

In my family, the adults get presents for the kids. This stops when they graduate college.
