I've done both--IMO the builder in a bottle is easier--just paint it on, turn hand over for a rop
minute to naturally form a slight apex and cure. Then polish. Easy peasy. Polygel is sort of like taffy and you have to manipulate it with a brush

How many coats of dip did they use? It sounds like they didn't build the apex correctly.
