There are various reasons that cause Oily & Acne skin. 1) Over- active sebaceous glands - Should the sebaceous glands become over-active, the skin pores can become overwhelmed by the amount of sebum that needs to be ejected through the skin pores. In some situations, due to increased levels of sebum the pore openings can become narrower making it difficult for the sebums to escape. The pores ultimately become blocked and pimples formed. The sebaceous glands can become over-active as a reaction to increased levels of the male sex hormones (androgens). Common to both males and females, these hormones stimulate the glands into producing too much sebums. In some people, the sebaceous glands are extremely sensitive to androgens. 2) Enlarged pores - Due to the over active sebaceous glands, large amount of oils is secreted and having to squeeze through the mini skin pores. Over time, the mini skin pores are enlarged to accommodate the flow of the excess oils from the sebaceous glands to the surface of the skin. As a result, oily skin condition would normally lead to the enlarged pores seen on the skin, which make the skin look rough and thick. 3) Bacterial infection - A clogged skin pore can become an inviting home for bacteria. If bacteria try to grow in a clogged pore, then the body’s white cells attack those bacteria. This creates the first stage of acne - the whitehead, which is followed shortly by blackheads. The longer this process is allowed to stay in the place, the worse the acne becomes, which might develop into pustules, cysts and nodules, that can give great chance of acne scarring.
